Walters State’s
Community and Economic
Development Office is
offering several new
classes designed for
would-be entertainers in
the area. One student
comedian will even win
the chance to perform
live at the Comedy Barn
in Pigeon Forge.
The comedian will be
chosen from students in
"Learn How to be a
Stand-up Comedian,"
taught by Phil Campbell.
The class will meet from
6-9 p.m. on Sept. 21, 28
and Oct. 5 and 12 in the
theatre of the Judge
William H. Inman
Humanities Complex on
the Morristown Campus.
Campbell will teach
students how to write
and perform a comedy
act. The son of
legendary comedian
Archie Campbell, Phil
Campbell has been
performing on stage for
over 20 years. The fee
for this class is
$97.43.
"Songwriting
101: Songwriting
Basics" will be
offered from 6-9 p.m. on
Sept. 14 and 21 on the
college’s Morristown
campus. The course will
be taught by Rick
Starkey, who has been
writing songs since the
age of 14. His career
accomplishments include
publishing contracts
with recording companies
in Nashville and in
Canada. This workshop
teaches the basics of
songwriting, including
title, verse and chorus.
The cost is $69. This
class is recommended for
students ages 17 and up.
"Songwriting:
Getting Down To
Business" will be
offered on Sept. 28 from
6-9 p.m. on the
Morristown campus. Also
taught by Starkey, this
class covers copyrights
and marketing songs. The
fee is $39.
"Street
Magic" will be
taught from 6-9 p.m. on
Sept. 14 and 21 on the
Morristown campus.
Master magician Twinkles
Baldwin, owner of Make
It Magic in Gatlinburg,
will share secrets from
the pros including
performing magic with
everyday objects.
Baldwin has performed in
magic in Las Vegas and
Atlantic City. Students
will work with cards,
coins, ropes and more to
learn how to make
objects disappear, pass
through other objects or
float. The class has a
$69 registration fee and
a $27 materials fee paid
to the instructor the
first night of class.
Baldwin will also teach
"How To Do Birthday
Parties as a Magician
and Make Money"
from 6-9 p.m. on Sept.
28 on the Morristown
campus. The course will
help students choose and
present magic tricks,
how to price parties and
prepare contracts and
how to keep control of
the party. The class has
a $39 fee.
Class sizes are limited.
